What is Essure and how is it different to an IUD?

Last night on TVNZ 1 News there was a very important article that people who had an Essure permanent contraceptive, which is placed in the fallopian tubes and designed to cause scars, should read about. You can find more about it here.

CONCERNINGLY this article implied Essure is an IUD.

IUDs are long acting reversible contraception designed to be removed. They are not made of the same material and are not designed to work in the same way. An IUD refers to Intrauterine Device and it is usually a T shaped device that is placed in the uterus (womb). IUDs last from 3-10 years and can be removed at any time.

People who have had Essure and are concerned should contact their doctor.

IF YOU HAVE AN IUD DON’T WORRY THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

If you are not sure then give your doctor a call and ask them which one you have.
